Melissa Nguyen at ACCA
Melissa Nguyen's new work, A letter to my mother; A letter to your mother (2026), has been commissioned by the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) and is now on view in the group exhibition Are you lonely tonight? I'm so lonesome I could cry., which 3 July.
Comprising three diptychs, the work imagines Nguyen's mother's life before motherhood. In place of family photographs, she draws on found images that stand in for an archive that does not exist, their obscured faces suggesting both the intimacy and unknowability of the past. The paintings offer a quiet reflection on the life her mother lived before she became a mother herself.
